He has done this by combining the best practices and standards of the several project management professional associations with his 35 years of experience as an architect, project and program manager, consultant, and teacher in both program and project management in many economic sectors and governmental agencies in many parts of the world.
The evolution over the past several decades of program management, and its recently recognized status as a management discipline that is distinctly different from - although highly dependent upon - the principles and practices of project management, is very well described in this book. In the 1950s the only place you could find program managers was in the military/aerospace industries, and it was then generally accepted that programs consisted of groups of inter-related projects. Since the 1990s project portfolio management emerged as an effective way to govern and manage groups of related projects, and many authors, included me, have written about managing portfolios of projects and programs. This approach may still be valid as long as one continues to define programs as simply groups of related projects.

While a good book with a lot of good info for Program Management, for me it was a little confusing for studying for a standard certification such as the PgMP. Although it is recommended for that, I found his switching between the different standards to be too confusing when you really need to keep a strong focus on the very specific details the PgMP test will ask you.

The author lays out and explains the key components in managing complex programs in great detail. He also provided examples which were quite helpful for me to grasp certain concepts. Let's face it, program management is a dry subject, but this book managed to captivate my interest. Quite frankly the PMI standard program management guide is a big yawn (sorry PMI!) and is too high level to provide any value other than a study guide to pass the exam. I need real life concepts and scenarios for me to learn and sharpen my leadership skills.

Would Buy Again. One of two recommended books on Program Management, the other is Portfolio and Programme Management Demystified: Managing Multiple Projects Successfully Geoff Reiss, Paul Rayner. I really find it annoying that you have to keep typing until you have twenty five words in these reviews. I would be inclined to fill out mofe if they would take off this requirement.
