Mathew Manning is a comic writing veteran, but I'd hate to read any of his comics based on this, as he really dumbs down his writing and his story here. Don Reiner is nearing the end of his shift at Berger's, Gotham City's largest department store when suddenly the lights go out and he and the store's customers find all of the doors locked. Panic ensues. However, minutes away Batman and Batgirl are out on patrol when they notice that there something wrong at Berger's.

Then something comes smashing through a display window and people start pouring out through the broken window. Batman picks the locks on the store's doors and lets the rest of the customers out. Thinking that only Jonathan Crane, a. k. a.: The Scarecrow, could be responsible for such a panicked melée, Batman chases down the culprit only to find that it's NOT The Scarecrow. This puzzles Batman, could the villain be somebody else other than The Scarecrow? Then there is an elevator failure, and again, it is somebody else other than The Scarecrow who causes the problem.

This is a brief forty-eight page short story, with illustrations, that is intended for those beginning to read. I guess that it's alright for them, as there is plenty of action and menace, but nothing seriously violent ever happens, and nobody is seriously hurt. Unfortunately, for anybody else "Batman: Scarecrow, Doctor Of Fear" will prove to be a disappointment. If you're old enough to read this then you will probably already be reading some of the comics, and you would better off doing so.

Mathew Manning is a comic writing veteran, but I'd hate to read any of his comics based on this, as he really dumbs down his writing and his story here. And the dialogue is really clichéd and painful to read to any regular reader. Yes, this is a kid's book, but that doesn't mean you have to insult the intelligence of any of them. If you look at the customer's images you can see how the book is written, lots of white space coupled with putting in the sound effects in big fancy lettering, the story reads like a reject from an issue of "Highlights Magazine".

Even the artwork, drawn by THREE people (Erik Doescher, Mike DeCarlo & Lee Loughridge), all of which are experienced comic book artists, is a disappointment, see customer's images again to see just how simplistic and cartoonish it is. It seems to be trying to imitate the cartoon series, but it lacks any of the animated Batman series style. The artwork in this booklet just ends up looking bland and unimaginative, like something out of a coloring book. Even The Scarecrow just comes across as more ugly than scary.

This is just one of a series of about thirty or forty chapter books in the "Super DC Heroes" series from Stone Arch. If the rest of the books have been produced on this level, just avoid them, there are so many better superhero books out there for young, and beginning, readers to read. Look for the collections of the "Superfriends" or the "Teen Titan" comic books that have been based on each of their animated series. They might cost a little more, but this book is $12.50, which is a lot of money for so little. You can do better; those other collections are well over a hundred pages of color, real comic stories, better artwork, and better paper. This book is for Batman completists and collectors only.

Great story, dialogue and action in this one. The whole package. Highly recommended. Manning's a comic book writer and he really brings his skills to bear here. Reluctant Readers will be re-reading this one!
