by Rosemary Wells

Benjamin is at a loss in handling Tulip's constant bullying.

This is (for the younger set) from the creator of Max and Ruby. I love how she plays the dynamics of Benjamin (the eternal suffering) against Tulip (terror). The same dynamic is played out in Max & Ruby, but more PC, I guess. I remember my sister and I checking out this book multiple times from the library when we were kids. Wanted it for my kids to read...it cost a small fortune since it is out of print, but WORTH IT. Pleeeeeaaaassssseee reprint it!

I love this book! It was read to me as a child by my grandmother. Brings back such lovely memories. I searched everywhere for it but it either was $200 bucks or not for sale. Finally I came across it on amazon for $20 and immediately bought it. So glad I did. I'll be able to share it with my kids one day.

This book has been a favorite in our family for quite some time. Recently I purchased this book as a gift from Brain Builder. The book was delivered in excellent time and my son (now grown but still enjoys things we all enjoyed together as a family) enjoyed reading it (very carefully I might add) but the cover came off. He had to reglue it. Brain Builder, when told of this problem refunded a portion of what I paid. I didn't expect it and it was a great surprise that the business did right by me. I heartily recommend Brain Builder as a seller. If you are not satisfied (and I'll be you will be) they will try to make you a happy customer.

Every time Benjamin meets Tulip she says "I'm gonna beat you up" and she does. Tulip is a little horror, gleefully dropping from the trees to mess up Benjamin's new suit with mud, an unruly, fearsome girl, as different as can be from the little goody-goody Ruby of the Max and Ruby books. Max eventually finds a watermelon helpful in taming the tyrannical Tulip and the book has a happy ending. Very amusing and much less bland than Rosemary Wells' other books.

I loved this book as a child, and am so sad we didn't hold on to my copy (especially if you notice how much the price is on the used copies). I managed to borrow a copy from a local library and my four year old son LOVES it too. He can't read it, but has memorized it and loves the illustrations of Tulip jumping out of the tree to terrorize poor Benjamin.
Wow, looking at the prices for used paperback copies of "Benjamin and Tulip" gives me new appreciation for my little careworn book. Since a small child, I have loved this book and it's illustrations, and it definitely ranks among the best of Picture Books for its expressive artwork. The simple story about bullies and getting the best of a bad situation is classic and hilarious. If you ever happen across a copy, snatch it up! Your kids will love it, no matter what their age.
