The Luna Brothers' epic "The Sword" is the sort of comic that fans will press on their non-comic reader friends.
It's that good.
It achieves that wonderful balance of being accessible to both people new to comics as well as the long term fans.
Plot? Magic sword causes havoc in present day USA. But it's so much more - the pacing and characterisation make this worth seeking out.
If your budget can manage it, buy all three volumes. You'll enjoy reading the chapters one after the other.
Those of us following comic have to wait a month between installments.
The original comic is currently working towards it's conclusion, so it's all waiting for you.

A word of caution - this is a comic about what a magic sword can do to people, so the violence is a level or two beyond what you may be expecting.
If you can get by that, you're in for one of the best reading experiences you're had in years.

Dara Brighton was a normal teen until 3 super-powered strangers killed her family. Her life was saved when she found a magic sword her father had hidden. Now she's hunting them and after killing Zakros she's now found his brother, the earth-controlling Knossos.

As with the other volumes of this series the plot and action are straightforward and done very, very well. The explanation of how Dara finds Knossos is a bit contrived but I'm not complaining since it keeps the story going. The battle with Knossos is another epic where the Luna's really take super-powered battles to a new level of realism and impact. For them when super humans start throwing punches real damage is done and people die.

The Sword was a strong series from start to finish and well-worth picking up.

The Sword is an enjoyable series with a great concept by The Luna Brothers, and features interesting characters, well-conceived plotlines and passable art. Published by Image comics, it has been collected into three trade paperbacks so far, and the quality of the printing is amazing, as we have come to expect from Image. This third trade collects issues #13-18 of the series, and again features Dara Brighton hunting one of the supernatural beings responsible for her family's murder. For those of you new to the series The Sword tells the story of four evil godlike elemental beings who forged a sword ages past as a symbol of their power only to discover that it could also be used as a weapon against them. A young Cretan named Demetrios took possession of the sword and used the amazing abilities and immortality it granted him to terrorize the elementals for millennia. In the 21st century Demetrios has seemingly forgotten his role as the custodian of the sword and has raised a family, which includes his paraplegic daughter Dara. The three remaining elementals track him down and slaughter his entire family in search of the sword, all save Dara who finds it and is imbued with its supernatural powers. (These events are chronicled in volume 1 of the series, entitled 'Fire'). She commences to track down the elementals with the help of two friends and manages to become one of the most hunted women in the world. This most recent volume details her search for Knossos, the master of earth, and features more of the same fare from vol. 2, which is the hunt, the eventual discovery, and the expected apocalyptic battle between Dara and her soon-to-be victim. Surprisingly enough, the elementals are the most interesting characters of the series, not Dara herself, who is driven only by her need for revenge. Zakros, Knossos and Malia are all quirky individuals with twisted and varied perceptions and beliefs, making them a pleasure to read even though they perpetrate an enormous amount of bloodshed and cruelty throughout the series. Whereas the first two volumes would have been given 4 stars, vol. 3 unfortunately contains nothing new except for the unexpected conclusion of the battle between Dara and Knossos. Even so, there is nothing that will stop me from reading the final volume of the series, which is slated for release in 2010. Here's hoping the The Luna Brothers will surprise us with the ending, because as of now, the series has become slightly predictable.

Without a doubt this should be on your book shelf.

The Luna brothers continue this comic in great way. Their ideas are fun and exciting. The Sword will continue to keep the reader guessing what happens next.

The artwork is good, but the story telling remains fresh. You should definitely buy this book.

Book began to fall apart at the spine as soon as I began reading it. Was very upset/

Dara Brighton's revenge continues as she hunts down the second brother, Knossos, to his meth-crafting lair in Mexico. It's another round of over-the-top violence mixed in with some back story on both Dara and the trio of siblings who killed her family. While the action vacillates between exciting and preposterous, the background stories give enough depth to the story to keep a reader engaged. Also, TV news coverage of events becomes more relevant in this issue, hinting at an apocalyptic outcome for the story in the next volume.

I found the violence a bit too ridiculous in this issue. The sword keeps Dara from dying no matter what happens to her, even when someone punches her jaw off. She just pops it back on and gets madder about things. Taking the story serious is very hard after something like that. The end brings a twist that makes it seem like the next issue won't be just another run of crazy violence, so I will finish the series off.

Exciting and great follow up to number 2! There are some really good plot twists that you never see coming....
