Jak P Mallman-Showell has written another winner about the German U-Bootwaffe. Drawn largely from the logbooks kept by U-boat commanders, Showell's latest book concentrates on the U-boat war from 1939 to 1943. This particular book focuses on the Battle of the Atlantic as seen through the eyes of a dozen or so U-Boat commanders. He describes the initial moves against Allied shipping, successes and losses in the Atlantic and Med, the heady days of the 'Happy Time,' Allied counter-measures, mid-war convoy battles, etc. Some of the players found in the book are U-boat legends like Prien, Luth, Kretschmer and Cremer; others, not so well-known.

Mallman Showell.

Noted U-boat historian Jak Mallman-Showell takes a fresh look at the strategy employed by both sides as Germany and Great Britain engaged in a fateful game of measure and countermeasure to gain control of the Atlantic supply lines. Drawing upon original records from the U-boat headquarters, the Royal Navy, and British special intelligence, the author explores how and why U-boat attacks were planned, describes U-boat organization, and tells what actually happened on the high seas.

Readers can view the Battle of the Atlantic through U-boat periscopes thanks to incredible eyewitness accounts bringing to life the horror of this war below and above sea Readers will taste the salt, smell the nauseating stench of the U-boats, and hear orders being whispered quietly while diving back in time to the horrendous inhumanity of the Battle of the Atlantic. The longest continuous military campaign of the Second World War, raging from 1939 to 1945, the Battle of the Atlantic saw the might of the Royal Navy pitted against the Kriegsmarine. The Germans' secret weapon was their fleet of U-boats—they had the largest fleet of submarines in the world, enabling them to play cat and mouse with the Allied forces to devastating effect. They would hunt in "wolf-packs" and would prey on merchant shipping and naval vessels. This startling book tells the story of this battle as viewed through the conning towers of these U-boats. It is written as the action unfolded, using surviving logs.

Jak P Mallman-Showell has written another winner about the German U-Bootwaffe. This particular book focuses on the Battle of the Atlantic as seen through the eyes of a dozen or so U-Boat commanders. Using both the original log books and personal reflections of the participants, historian Mallman-Showell gives a fascinating view of the Battle of the Atlantic from the vantage point of the man who is looking though the periscope. I have read most, if not all, of Mr. Mallman-Showell's books on various aspects of the U-Bootwaffe and I always learn new and interesting facts and interpretations of events in each of his books. This book is no different.

One of the fascinating points made in this book is the nature of Kriegsmarine logbooks. According to the author these were actually formal legal documents and specific information had to entered at specific times and the kommandant had to sign off on every entry.

Mr. Mallman-Showell, who is fluent in German, has mined the golden ore of material at the U-Boot Archiv in Cuxhaven to produce many of his books. His father was KIA aboard a U-Boat and the author never knew his father. Perhaps his fascination with U-Boats stems from that. Whatever the reason, Mr. Mallman-Showell, who is English, has written by far the most outstanding collection of works on the UBootwaffe and the Kriegsmarine. I would say without reservation that he is the number one U-Boat historian in the world and that anyone who has an interest in U-Boats would do well to begin their study with any of Mr. Mallman-Showell's books.
Togar

Noted military historian Jak Mallmann Showell once again focuses on Hitler's deadly 'grey wolves' in U-BOATS ATTACK, THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC WITNESSED BY THE WOLF PACKS. Over the past 30 years, Showell has written dozens of similarly-themed books and U-BOATS ATTACK, a 2011 History Press release, is yet another fine addition to the literature.

Drawn largely from the logbooks kept by U-boat commanders, Showell's latest book concentrates on the U-boat war from 1939 to 1943.

Since Showell interweaves the general war situation with the individual activities of various U-boats, the reader gets an evenhanded but exciting account of the grey wolves and their role and impact in the war. Eight pages of b&w photographs illustrate various U-boats; I would have liked more pix of the commanders.

In any case, U-BOATS ATTACK offers a fresh, entertaining summary of the U-boats' early wartime activities. Hopefully, there will be a second volume that takes the story from 1943 to war's end. Recommended.
