In 1927, Scotland's University of Edinburgh offered Childe the post of Abercromby Professor of Archaeology, a new position established in the bequest of the prehistorian Lord Abercromby. Childe's next book, The Bronze Age (1930), dealt with the Bronze Age in Europe, and displayed his increasing adoption of Marxist theory as a means of understanding how society functioned and changed.

A vocal socialist, Childe accepted the socio-economic theory of Marxism and was an early, though unorthodox, proponent of Marxist archaeology.

Vere Gordon Childe was born in north Sydney, Australia, on 14 April 1892, the son of an Anglican minister. He studied classics at the University of Sydney and went on to Oxford University. His academic publications marked milestones in the development of culture-historical archaeology, and his later volumes 'Man Makes Himself' (1936) and 'What Happened in History' (1942) brought a much wider audience to his work and a longer-lasting legacy. After retiring, Childe returned to Australia.
