Series: The New Edinburgh Islamic Surveys. Paperback: 208 pages. Nielsen, an academic in Birmingham, England, who specializes on Muslim life in Europe, provides a very useful survey of the ten or more million Muslims in twelve countries, ranging from Spain and Italy in the south to Norway and Sweden in the north. The contents are dry-a presentation of historical background, then of demographic, legal, educational, and political issues-but nonetheless chock full of interest.

There are mistakes, and it seems based on old work. Still, a serviceable summary.

The poor knowledge and the superficial approach about this subject could be understandable in a book published in 1950, but not in a academic work of 2014. It is ludicrous when a British scholar pretends to 'reconsider' 800 years of Spanish history in 280 pages ignoring the most basic bibliography about this subject. Just talking about the Islamic conquest of Spania (yes, the term Hispania-Spania-España is present in contemporary sources), there are essential books written by Eduardo Manzano (2006), Felipe Maíllo Salgado (2011), Nicola Clarke (2012), Luís Ángel García Moreno (2013) and Alejandro García Sanjuán (2013) that have been ignored.
