This is Volume I (chapters 1-16) of the best-selling Western civilization text that has helped hundreds of thousands of students learn about the present by exploring the past. Jack Spielvogel's engaging, chronological narrative weaves the political, economic, social, religious, intellectual, cultural, and military aspects of history into a gripping story that is as memorable as it is instructive. Each chapter offers a substantial introduction and conclusion that sparks students' imaginations by giving them a context within which to understand these disparate themes. And while the single-author narrative makes it easy for students to follow the story of Western civilization, Spielvogel has included dozens of maps and primary sources--including official documents, poems, and songs--that enliven the past while introducing students to the challenges involved in interpreting history. I rented both the hardcopy and the kindle version for my history 101 class.

In the kindle version the maps are INCOMPLETE. For instance, the map on page 120 correctly identifies the "Baths of Nero" in the hard copy version. The kindle version however identifies it as "aths o ero". These kinds of mistakes are on every single map in every single chapter so far. Another one is "China" on pg 117 in the kindle version it shows "C I A".

Another problem I've found is places where documents are shown from other sources such as on page 126 where a selection is taken from against Celsus by Origen of Alexandria, in the hard copy there's the actual block of text where Origen defends the value of Christianity. In the kindle version you get a gray square where the text should be and a message that says, "Text not available due to copyright restrictions". If I hadn't had the hardcopy I would have missed a couple of test questions.

It makes me apprehensive about using kindle for textbooks in the future.

The kindle version of this book is garbage. The text is ripped from the actual book and pasted into the kindle app. The chapter headings, chapter partitions and additional reading are all the same size and font as the rest of the text making it super hard to read. There is no reference to which page or chapter you are currently on, so if you are using this for a class referencing the book is a nightmare. Trying to even find what chapter you are on requires flipping through the pages until you reach the beginning of a chapter and hopping that you do not miss it, because the chapter introduction looks like the rest of the text. There are several sources documents that are removed from the Kindle version of the book, meaning that if you need to review that document in the book you are screwed. Worst $20 I have ever spent, a badly photocopied PDF version of the book would be 100 times better than this "official kindle" version.

As far as books on Western Civilization go, this is the bookiest of all the books. It's pages are most papery while maintaining a very covery cover too. If you're looking for a very collegy kind of college book then I would highly recommend this book. It was exactly what my son needed for his college class, especially knowing that his instructor was pretty clear and concise on getting this particular book.

Great history textbook. I am taking Western Civ 101 online, with numerous essay questions due each week. The book makes the class a breeze. The way it is written is very easy to understand and follow. It's set up very nicely for use with my assignments: every section is headlined with the topic and important points are bolded, which makes it very easy to find what you are looking for without having to look back to the index.

Overall it is a very interesting book. Ancient history is not everyone's cup of tea, but after having this book for a few weeks I am seeing how fascinating it really is. The book is so easy to read that even if I didn't have to take this class I would still want to read it.

This book is really detail-oriented with vivid pictures and easy to follow writing. I am using this book right now for my History class. The questions at the end of the chapter reviews and the focus questions are really good at helping you stay focused on the "big picture" and challenging yourself to remember the material. This book is not the boring "history is just about learning the dates" kind of teaching. The author actually reaches into the era, and explains what was really going on. I definitely recommend this book, even for "History class haters."

Book arrived on time, and in excellent condition. I used an e-book of this text for a two-part college course a while back, and liked it so much that I decided to get a physical copy of it. I would recommend watching for it go on sale though, as it can be quite pricey. I got mine, new, for $92. If you like History and want a text that goes from the beginning of recorded history to present day that has many insights into the daily lives of our ancestors, this may be the book for you.

I actually love this book. First, I used it to prepare for the Western Civ 1 CLEP (I will be using it for Western Civ 2 CLEP, as well). I read once through with a hi-liter and then I did three practice tests from petersons.com. I passed the CLEP with a 70 (out of 80).
Second, I found it to be very interesting!!! This author did such a good job of presenting a timeline, so that I could organize the ideas easily in my head. This is obviously necessary if you are to keep your facts straight. He did a better job than the history books I have read previously (high school mainly). He also took great care to regularly present the status of women, slaves and minorities (or oppressed majorities) throughout the book and even included very interesting blurbs of ancient writings to illustrate many of these things. I learned more about the status of WOMEN in the history of Western Civ, than I ever have in any other book before. And it was all there organized for me.
I am a military history/studies major, and I have already used this book once to familiarize myself with the Punic Wars, for a project. It really helped me get a basic grip on it, and provided quite a bit of what I needed to know.

I really like this book. ;)
This is an extremely detailed book that goes in-depth on many different topics. It does a good job with setting down the basics and allows the professor to build on it. My history professor used the textbook as a guideline to build up on the material and make each topic a story. Since the class was a lecture, if I missed anything, I could always reference the book again.
