Cheesy recommendations. Should sell it back. Should have known, can't remember what I wanted from the book but should have controlled the impulse to buy it.

365 Ways to Live Green contains, as you might expect, 365 tips to living a green and sustainable life. The book is divided into 20 sections, and each section contains basic tips to decrease your environmental impact. Tips include common topics like recycling and less common ones, such as cat litter and funeral planning. This is a terrific starting point for people who are new to thinking and acting sustainably. Pocket-sized, printed on post-consumer recycled paper, and costing less than $4.00, this makes a great gift or addition to a green library.

I consider this book "light green" at best and corporate greenwashing at worst. There are some useful references to organizations that give accreditation or screenings, if you want to buy something that is greener. The problem is that when green solutions are still focused on buying things, we fall short. The format of the book is not useful, and I don't see many people sitting and reading it cover to cover. Its almost like a reference book but not quite laid out in a way that facilitates that use. The book also makes controversial recommendations, including the use of nuclear power, although the disposal of nuclear waste is one of the largest environmental problems of the planet. The entire chapter on Planning Your Legacy falls short of truly green methods of burial, going so far as to justify the use of embalming fluid, which is a highly poisonous soil contaminant. Even the explanation of composting makes it sound too difficult to bother with. A person who is truly doing nothing good for the planet would probably find some good information in here to get started, but if you want to live a truly green life, there are far better resources. The environmental issues we face are far too severe to shop our way out of them. Eating at a greener restaurant or buying a t-shirt that promotes recycling are great but have the potential to be feel-good solutions with meaningless consequences.

I liked this book mainly because it is very easy to read and understand. People need to change their behavior. If everyone would do one thing differently every day of the year we would be in the right direction.
