During this time Thompson worked on a TV film series titled The Magic Island shot in Tokyo and Hong Kong. When his tour of duty ended in 1960, he spent some time in California studying drama and filmmaking at the Pasadena Playhouse. According to Terry Lindvall and Andrew Quicke’s book Celluloid Sermons: The Emergence of the Christian Film Industry 1930–1986, Thompson had encountered Doughten in the late 1960s while they were both involved with Paramount.
