A young intelligent and beautiful woman learns with shock that she is HIV positive

A young intelligent and beautiful woman learns with shock that she is HIV positive. She cannot go ahead with her plans to study in the USA, and she has to adjust to thinking as somebody at the end of her life. The novel takes the form of a long revelatory letter to her closest woman friend, both moving and factually revealing about Aids and the young woman's life.

Catherine expresses her feelings of being an AIDS victim to one of her best friends Marilyn through a letter. In the letter, she reveals initial days of her life when she became sexually active and how she feels about being a HIV positive woman in contemporary Africa. The confession not only provides the readers with factual information but also with how to deal with AIDS in personal and societal level. The political and social life of Africa particularly that of Kenya is well described in the novel. Carolyne, the author goes describing the different ups and downs of character's life, first love affairs with the step brother, cycles of infatuations, search of dream boy, another sexual relationship with a school senior, cycles of relationships with businessmen, managers and so on. In totality, this is very thrilling and aggressive kind of book and one wouldn't find out how quickly the time lapsed when one reads this book.

This is a good novel. Author describes the lived experience of a well-educated person living with HIV/AIDS using the form of a letter. The novel could be interesting to follow. Readers will gain knowledge on self-stigma related to HIV infection and the processes of human adaptation after they know their HIV status. Particularly, the author also addresses the important issue on HIV infection among young people. The story reflects the lack of accessibility to HIV/AIDS information which might be a major cause of HIV transmission in Africa. Even though among high school students they had not known how HIV/AIDS could be transmitted to others and how to protect themselves from HIV infection.
