by Irwin SHAW

Great book, very talented author.

A dead man’s briefcase presents a down-on-his-luck pilot with the chance. Great book, very talented author. Nightwork by Irwin Shaw is an in the moment thriller about a hero stuck in a dead end lifestyle, how he comes upon a large sum of money and the adventures that ensue. The hero is relatable, and seemingly "stuck", and then his life undergoes a series of transformations which we have a first row seat to as the readers.

Finished with my calculations of times, weights, distances, sunshine, and rain, I read, making sure always to have a supply of books on hand to suit my tastes. For other nourishment there was a sandwich and a bottle of beer that I picked up on the way to work. Twice during the night I did isometric exercises, for the arms, the gut, the legs.

For an entire generation of authors, the name Irwin Shaw is one to conjure with. In his memoir Which Lie Did I Tell?, William Goldman calls him my great writing hero, the man who changed my life. Shaw’s short stories, among them The Girls in Their Summer Dresses, made his reputation, and his novel Rich Man, Poor Man became a television event in the 1970s. Yet when a friend told me about the impact Shaw’s Nightwork had on him as a young man, I realized how little of Shaw’s work is now in print. I couldn’t even get a copy of the book at the library.

Shaw was born Irwin Gilbert Shamforoff in the South Bronx, New York City, to Russian Jewish immigrants. His parents were Rose and Will. While living in Europe, Shaw wrote more bestselling books, notably "Lucy Crown" (1956), "Two Weeks in Another Town" (1960), "Rich Man, Poor Man" (1970) (for which he would later write a less successful sequel entitled "Beggarman, Thief") and "Evening in Byzantium" (made into a 1978 TV movie).

What a great story. Moves along at a nice and comfortable clip. Interesting characters only enrich the plot. Reminds me of why I love fiction so much. And just the perfect length. I often feel that many of the books I read could have accomplished the same if they were shorter. But not Nightwork.
I had not read Shaw before, but I knew of his reputation. I thoroughly enjoyed my first venture and have subsequently purchased another Irwin Shaw book. The characters here were interesting and the plot both hopeful and thoughtful. Most of the action takes place in Europe and that added something different for me as well. Who knew that a somewhat criminal act could have so many consequences and touch so many lives. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I've read the Rich Man books years ago and enjoyed them. A few days ago I read another Shaw book. It really gave me a jolt. Then I picked up Night work and was just blown away again. Gonna get another, and another...
This book makes you question your moral compass and certainly contemplate shades of grey. It doesn't give you all the answers but keeps you wondering what will happen next. Glad I stumbled across it.
takes you to a time and place where there are no drugs, no gangs, no racial or class

irwin shaw was a master and gets to use his knowledge of art, equine handicapping,

food, law, musems, and women.

no gangs, no drugs.

written at a pace that evokes a gentler time, a gentler place.

still, with shaw's hallmark great plot premise and believable action and suspense.

great characters, great settings.

you will be swept away from the 1st few pages.
You can read it in one sip. Like usual in the book of Shaw you can find excellent language, interesting story and open final - you don't see happy end or any end at all. He just pauses the story and all of rest is your fantasy business.
Reading about the author's own experiences makes this novel even more intriguing! The story and the characters keep the reader's interest to the last paragraph.
This is a very good book. Lots of twists and turns, throughly enjoyable.I would recommend it to all my friends
