I don't know how a print edition is converted to digital, but whatever the process, it didn't work well for this book. I can overlook the occasional typo, but this is so badly edited that it's distracting. Punctuation is haphazard, letters and words are missing or are obviously incorrect. I'll probably wade through it, because it's easy enough to see what was intended, but the editing errors don't do justice to the book or author.
So enjoyed this book. I was sorry when it ended; could have kept on reading about these characters. Still thinking about the questions this book raised such as "How well do we know the one we love?" "What can we forgive?" "Can people really change and/or make restitution for their past mistakes?"
I have never given a book one star...ever. I cannot add much to what others have already mentioned, except to ask some questions and to say, the title is a bit misleading. You are informed there is a diary. That is a fact. For me, there was an expectancy it would hold a bit more substance in line with the plot. At the very least a deeper revelation of it's contents. When that is not forthcoming, it is obvious a more fitting title should have included lilies, or birds or maybe star gazing charts. As several others have mentioned, the grammatical errors are so numerous, it most certainly diverts the reader from any desire to continue. Lastly, there are many unbelievable questions. Why would the killer bother to take the key and not the diary? Why would he wipe away finger prints, yet leave bloodied clothing with his DNA and his wallet in the glove compartment? Really?
I am only 28% through the Kindle edition and while I am enjoying the story and the writing very much, I have to say this is a terrible edition that needs a good proof-reader. It is RIDDLED with errors, often several on each page. It makes the reading difficult and distracting, at least for me. Some of the typos were so bad it took a long time to figure out the word that was meant so I could make sense of the sentence. I often correct Kindle errors when I find them, but there are so many here I have given up and am just trying to get through it. I hope the "powers that be" see this review and correct it for future readers.
I am an unabashed Alice Hoffman fan. Her prose mesmerizes and her storytelling is spellbinding.

That said, the author and publisher need to know that something went horribly awry when the book was formatted for Kindle. There are numerous misspellings and weird punctuation glitches. I’m sure it would be an easy fix to reload this file so that the edited, clean version is available in the Kindle edition.
The story is haunting and the characters are captivating - even the ones you can't love, no matter how much you want to. The editing is so horrible it makes me sad, because Alice Hoffman is one of my favorite authors. I have to think the transfer to a Kindle version caused some crazy misinterpretation of text. I loved the book so much I may read it in paperback just to see.
the monster
Another amazing foray into Alice Hoffman's brilliant imagination and insight. One curious thing to note: this text had numerous capitalization, spelling and punctuation errors, something I haven't seen before in Hoffman's work. Not enough to detract from the story, but weird.
Interesting story of getting inside of people who you think are perfect and find out they are not who or what you think they are and how one goes about dealing with it. Definitely recommend this book
