The One Thing More book. Anne Perry has been in my TBR pile for some time, particularly The Carter Street Hangman series which I have heard many good things about. It is January 1793  . The One Thing More was the first of her novels I have actually read, and it did not live up to the expectations set from the feedback of her other, better known novels. The story is set during a time of French civil unrest, with an uprising against the King. While that sounds right up my alley, the story unfortunately fell flat, and was tediously boring.

To June Wyndham Davies. With thanks for turning dreams into reality. But if you knew the one thing more. Chapter One. CÉLIE LAURENT STOOD IN the crowded darkness of the public gallery of the Convention.

The deputies had been debating the sentence on the King since 14 January-three days now. Tonight they were returning their verdict, each emerging from the shadows to climb the rostrum for his moment. She watched the man who stood up there now, the candlelight shining on his face as he stared out at the packed room, exhausted after hours of argument. He said only the one word, ‘Death,’ then scuttled down the steps, feet clattering on the wood, and disappeared. His place was taken by another

Though I love Anne Perrys books I had a hard time following this book. However as it got closer to the end I couldn't put it down. Perhaps not knowing French history was my problem, not the author's.

My criticism of this story is that the extensive discussions about what might be either the characters' motives or reactions become somewhat tedious simply because of their excessive descriptive volume. I am a happy fan of Anne Perry's stories but found this tale replete with too much speculation and introspection.

French Revolution, a bit different from Victorian London; but a good read --- and murder, of course.

This is a wonderful take on the last few days before the end of the monarchy in France. Great mystery, wonderful history.

Very informative story about France. I enjoyed the story and the surprise ending was masterfully done. Well worth the read

Although Perry is noted for her British period series, I enjoyed following her into the French Revolution for One Thing More. Well researched, we enter the minds of some uncommon ordinary people to share their joys, fears and terrors. More is an excellent study of the inability to control the results of a revolution once set in motion.

Anne Perry is always a great read. This was not my favorite, but it's good.
A mystery set during the French Revolution. Characters that leap off the page at you. Feel all of the fear and confusion this time in history. A tale well told. A story that will hold you until the end.
