Isak Dinesen is the pseudonym of Karen Blixen, born in Denmark in 1885. After her marriage in 1914 to Baron Bror Blixen, she and her husband lived in British East Africa, where they owned a coffee plantation. She was divorced from her husband in 1921 but continued to manage the plantation for another ten years, until the collapse of the coffee market forced her to sell the property and return to Denmark in 1931. There she began to write in English under the nom de plume Isak Dinesen. Her first book, and literary success, was Seven Gothic Tales.

Yet it was so. Angelo walked out through the prison gate, behind which he had for twelve hours been hostage for his condemned master, into a world which to him contained no direction whatsoever. Angelo walked out through the prison gate, behind which he had for twelve hours been hostage for his condemned master, into a world which to him contained no direction whatsoever as totally isolated, an absolutely lonely figure in this world, and he felt that the man whose grief and shame-like his own-exceeded that of all others must at the same time be exempt from the laws which governed those others. He made up his mind not to sleep any more

Isak Dinesen's "Seven Gothic Tales" is one of my favorite books. Recently I also read "Winter's Tales," a marvelous and vivid collection of her stories published a few years later. However, I was disappointed in this collection, titled "Last Tales." The stories here are mostly constructed in the mold of "Seven Gothic Tales," but they seem bereft of their magic. Even the one called "Echoes," a continuation of the story in "Seven Gothic Tales" of a former opera singer called Pellegrina Leoni, lacks the depth of the earlier tale. But perhaps these stories will reveal their magic if I read them at least one more time....

This is a rare treasure to own. Hard to find. Isak Dinesen was a famous writer. I love it! A++++
Kagrel
Old-fashioned, elegant entertainment and first-rate literature in the bargain. These stories have the magic of fairytales (for grown-ups) and the wisdom of great art.
