Rene Wellek's History of Criticism 1750-1950 is required reading for anyone who wants a discerning overview of the subject. Interesting that in this volume Wellek evaluates the work of . Leavis, a critic with whom he had a very significant exchange about criticism. Leavis contended there were no general rules, no theory, only the act of criticism itself. Like many of Leavis' statements, this is an elaborate sophistry, as the rest of the survey in this and the other volumes by Wellek demonstrates, as well as Leavis' own work, especially THE GREAT TRADITION, his best book
