Tales about an adulterous wife who leaves her husband for the chief of police, a woman suffering the ating effects of a stroke, a young girl trying out for the gymnastics team are all distorted by the fact that they take place in Nazi Germany. Hershman allows only swift glimpses of the increasing violence against the Jews-the police roundups, the shop closings, the sirens in the night, resettlment, and forced labor as seen through the uncritical eyes of Kreiswald's Aryan citizens.

Marcie Hershman's haunting Tales of the Master Race circles the streets of Kreiswald, an imaginary town in Germany, during the crucial years of the Third Reich. It takes us inside the lives of "ordinary" German citizens-Aryan men and women-marking the subtle and more overt alterations brought about by the Nazi regime.

It has been a long time since I have read a novel this engaging

Hershman's portrait and-in effect-indictment of Kreiswald, a town small enough so that most people know one another, is. .As Thea, a member of the local resistance, observes: & was something called the national good.

Hershman's portrait and-in effect-indictment of Kreiswald, a town small enough so that most people know one another, is made up of individual stories, with a cast of common characters who increasingly behave as if & and murder were to be tolerated. It entered our lives assiduously, like a whiff of perfume, seducing innocent and intelligent alike; by the end, caught lying with it under our soiled flag, we all stank.

The earliest is Marcie Hershman (American, Tales of the Master Race, 1991), followed by Gila Lustiger (GermanJewish, Die Bestandsaufnahme, 1995, published in English as The Inventory,. 2001) and Rachel Seiffert (British, The Dark Room, 2001). Although only Lustiger is the child of a survivor, all may be counted in the ranks of the second, or even third generation, who strive, each in their way, to recreate the daytoday workings of society in the lives of ordinary folk under the Third Reich, to pose once again that allconsuming question: How could it have happened?

First-person accounts of the residents of Kreiswald--among them a police clerk force to measure the heads of local townspeople destined for the guillotine and a stroke victim who witnesses the secret nocturnal deportation of Jews--reveal how the Nazis' plan was carried out

This masterclass of a unified short story collection shows how "good people" lose their heads and the spaghettification of their souls by the inexorable tidal forces of authoritarianism. Though Tales of the Master Race was published during the last year of the Cold War, the stories contained herein may seem remarkably prescient to readers of the early 21st century.

It has been a long time since I have read a novel this engaging. What a page turner! I could not put it down! What makes the story even more fascinating is the way it is so well-written, you can see yourself in the characters and their total obliviousness to what is going on around them in the midst of their self-centered little dramas -- pretty much like what is going on today in the USA. If only we could all see beyond the next drama to the bigger picture. The world is crumbling all around us, and we can't even see the sacrificial victims on the trains on their way to the ovens.
Very often we wonder how such a thing could have happened. Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it. It is not difficult at all. And all one has to do to change it is to pay attention.
Pay attention now. Read this book.

I was surprised this had only one review, but then realized it was out of print. That's a shame because it's one of the best Holocaust books I have read (and I've read over a hundred). Although it may be hard to get a copy, trust me, it's worth it. There's something subtle yet disturbing about Ms. Herschman's prose...I constantly recommend this book and pick it up second hand when I can. It quietly offers an explanation of how such a thing could happen, in a way that only fiction can.

It didn't work for me.
