Everything felt muffled in this agonizingly slow behemoth. The narrator and main character is a woman who experiences a terrible tragic loss, which is foreshadowed for about a hundred pages in which she complacently describes her perfect life, perfect husband, and perfect "Botticelli angels" of twin children. There is excessive description of skies which are too often "cerulean", landscape which is "God's country" (western Connecticut?), and endless cups of coffee. None of the description adds anything to the plot. It just feels like padding. There's a confused and pointless backstory about the narrator's parents' unhappy marriage. There is a loyal friend who is completely taken for granted.

After the tragic plot turn, all characters behave as if they have been partially anaesthetized. Reader stumbles through a swamp of vague emotions which lasts for four years, and reading about it felt equally long. I only kept reading because I thought something interesting had to happen eventually; how wrong I was.

I find it hard to believe Barbara Taylor Bradford wrote either of these books. There was really no plot in Everything to Gain and A Secret Affair was almost a short story that anyone could write. After reading and enjoying the Woman of Substance series I was looking forward to reading more of her novels. I now wonder if I will be wasting my time again by reading any more of them.

She always touches heart strings. I know I'll love it before I read.
I hope to keep reading more. Just passed "A women of Substance" to my Granddaughter.

I keep hoping that BBTaylor will surpass the first book I read of hers, A Woman of Substance" . This was a good book but, in my opinion, did not come up to that level. The characters were interesting and the story line a bit predictable. It is a good recreational read.

I have been a Barbara Taylor Bradford fan for a long time. She writes long novels. Not full of extraordinary stuff on every page. Rather, she goes deeply into the lives of her heroes and heroines, bringing us along. So, when something new happens to them, we are ready for the adventures.
The books are well written, and hold my interest all the way through. By the end of the novel, I rather hate to stop reading about these characters.
