Cockfighter by Charles Willeford is a great novel chronicling a time when cockfighting was a major sport in Florida and other states and countries. The book reveals a portion of the large body of knowledge necessary to not only be successful, but to win Cockfighter of the Year. Some history is covered and the reader learns of the involvement of historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln and George Washington in the time honored sport pitting bird against bird in a fight to the death.

First published as an unheralded paperback original, Pick-Up is an authentic underground classic, an explosive bulletin from the urban underbelly of mid-1950s America. It was Charles Willeford's second novel, after a rough and wandering earlier life that had taken him from Depression-era hobo camps and soup kitchens to wartime battlefields. There he meets the alluring stepmother of the decedant, and begins to wonder about dating a witness.

Of that book, Harry Crews said, Charles Willeford renders the sport with such knowledge and attention to detail tha. had the almost inexpressible impression of being on my knees again beside the great fighting pits of the southern circuit. It's about a subject that most people hate, me too. However, the book is a great read. It has an interesting plot, complex characters, and offers a pretty good idea about why people are interested in the sport in the first place. I enjoyed it and didn't think I would, so give it a read

Life is a violent mechanism, navigated by ritual, devotion, endurance. The less you say, the better. Just dig in and know your business. That is the ultimate story told in COCKFIGHTER, where the men in the southern cockfighting scene could be replaced by lawyers in a courtroom or commanders of space cruisers. Each man titrates his humanity for the mechanism hoping to limp out of the pit alive.

Fast read, fascinating if gruesome look into the 'sport.' Conjures up a sub-culture operating under the radar seeking legitimacy or not as in this arena it is more than a way of life. Fascinating reveal of intricacies in raising and training of these fighting birds.

I bought this book in an independent bookstore in L.A. on a whim while on vacation, without knowing anything about Charles Willeford. It was perhaps my best impromptu book purchase to date.

Cockfighter is a story of the pursuits of the protagonist, Frank Mansfield, to reach excellence in the field of cockfighting. More than anything, it is a story of a man's values and integrity during struggle and success. Willeford does an incredible job of painting an accurate picture of the sport of cockfighting. While this sport may seem inhumane to some (if not most) of the general public, Willeford portrays the honor and integrity of the sport without shying away from its gruesome truths. He does so in prose that is accessible yet vivid.

I loved every minute of it.

How can cockfighting be applauded? Willeford creates an story that has the reader appreciating the commitment, expertise and craziness of a devoted cock fighter. For the length of the book we lose sight of the inhumanity associated with the activity and just enjoy the tail.
.....I have read most of his books and this is one of the best. It taught me a lot about chickens that I did not know and also, the story was so compelling about relationsships and about the deep south. This book had it all...
