This is Perry Mason and Erle Stanley Gardner at their best. You could give your Grandma a copy of the latest Perry Mason for Christmas. The plot is clever, Mason is even more clever, and there isn't a dull moment. It was in competition with the classic noir mysteries of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler and Gardner's writing (while competent) isn't in the same class. I think it can be explained by the fact that Gardner's books, while undeniably hard-boiled and having an edgy West Coast feel to them, were rather sanitized versions of this genre. Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe might have caused the old gal to have a heart attack. The protagonist, Rhoda Montaine, is human enough to be both fallible and likable. Perry Mason was a tough competitor, but gentlemanly and a member of an honored profession, which private detective work isn't and never has been. And the constant presence of Della Street gives the books a gentler, more feminine feel than other noir mysteries. Two things struck me as funny.

The Case of the Curious Bride is a 1935 mystery film, the second in a series of four starring Warren William as Perry Mason, following The Case of the Howling Dog. The script was based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Erle Stanley Gardner, published by William Morrow and Company, which proved to be one of the most popular of all the Perry Mason novels. The movie marked Errol Flynn's first appearance in a Hollywood film. He appears twice, as a corpse and in flashback towards the end.

The Case of the Curious Bride

“Helen Crocker” visits Perry Mason on behalf of a friend, whose husband has disappeared after an airplane crash. The insurance company won’t pay until the body has been recovered. Her friend also wonders about her right to re-marry. Perry gives her his legal advice that must go to the client directly (Chapter 1). Perry specialized in trial law, where there is little repeat business. Paul Drake drops in to tell what he noticed about the recent visitor - she was being followed! Paul Drake doesn’t miss much (Chapter 2). The visitor left her purse behind, with a real address. Perry uses this information to trace his visitor (Chapter 3). Now Rhoda Montaine finds Perry and explains her problem (Chapter 5). Her first husband Gregory Moxley, believed dead, is still alive!

The next morning the headlines tell of the murder of Gregory Moxley, Rhoda’s first husband. Her present husband Carl visits Perry to ask for help (Chapter 6). Perry moves fast to track down his client and save her. Rhoda tells Perry what happened last night. The `Chronicle’ reporters show up for Rhoda’s surrender, the police arrest Rhoda (Chapter 7). Can the public be affected by by what they read in the newspapers (Chapter 8)? If fingerprints were obliterated from the murder weapon and door knob, what does that say? Carl Montaine’s father visits Perry to convince him to sacrifice Rhoda for the Montaine name! Perry refuses (Chapter 10). Chapters 11 and 12 show Perry doing home repairs of an unusual nature! Paul Drake gets a lead on a possible past wife of Gregory Moxley (Chapter 13). They question Doris Freeman about the telephone call made before the murder (Chapter 14), and locate the man who worked with Doris (Chapter 15).

Carl Montaine tries to have his marriage annulled on the grounds of Rhoda’s previous marriage, which would allow him to testify against his wife. But Perry reveals that Gregory Moxley was married years before. Now that the judge affirms their marriage, Perry asks Rhoda to sue for divorce (Chapter 16)! Doctor Millsap’s nurse comes crying to see Perry (Chapter 17). Perry quickly accepts the jury, the prosecutor questions each juror closely in hope of finding a “plant”, but this upsets the jury (Chapter 18)! The jury is sent to examine the scene of the crime. In Chapter 19 the testimony resumes when the next-door witnesses tell about hearing a telephone ring and the ringing of a doorbell. Or was it an alarm clock?

In Chapter 20 there is the interview between Perry and C. Phillip Montaine, the very wealthy father of Carl. The facts kept hidden are now disclosed in a surprise. The charges against Rhoda are dismissed (Chapter 21). Perry asks Rhoda to reimburse Doris Freeman for the money taken by Gregory; a happy ending for all. [The very wealthy man is an interesting and unusual character; most of Perry’s clients are the self-made businessman.]

A masterful reading of a wonderful novel. Unfortunately, this abridgement cuts out so much that the storyline becomes almost nonsensical. In the original book Mason gets two eyewitnesses to change their story by convincing them that they were mistaken in what they thought they heard. In this condensed version, the eyewitnesses change their story after simply being asked, "Are you sure you are not mistaken?" The book was better.
