I am reading a book right now entitled, Why pray? 40 days - from words to relationship, by John Devries. This morning was day 11 of the 40. This paragraph hit me: All this reminds me of what a pastor said to me after I gave a message on praying according to the pattern of the Lord’s Prayer.

This little book shows you how to banish fear and enjoy peace by studying Psalm 23, the most . John DeVries picks seven reasons 'not to be afraid' from each of the six verses. Why Fear? (9780988420229) by John DeVries.

This little book shows you how to banish fear and enjoy peace by studying Psalm 23, the most well-known Psalm in the Bible. As you apply these reasons to the fears that particularly trouble you, God can give you a new freedom from fear, and with that freedom, a new peace: 'And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus' (Philippians 4:7).

Unbelievable how the author can say so much in such a few pages. The first few chapters alone are worth the read. Practical. Challenging. Every spiritual leader should read this book as it brings the focus back to the starting line: prayer. Too often we get busy, make plans, strategize and then after all the work is done, we say a short "obligatory" prayer and ask God's blessing. This book reminds us where everything should start...with prayer! Prayer is the fuel that drives the engine.

This book is full of practical everyday information on why do we pray?
It really isn't to get things from God. At least it shouldn't be!
I bought my first copy of this book from a closeout sale of a Christian Book Store that went out of business. I was in a low spot in my spiritual life and I had the same question, "Why Pray?"
This book was nothing like I had in mind! It took me from the doldrums to a much higher relationship with Almighty God.
This book is an easy read, no big fancy words, just plain simple language and straight forward information.
The chapters are short and it is intended to be read one chapter daily for 40 days.
It is great for the newly saved person and also for the more mature Christian. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a closer relationship with God!
My wife and I have since bought over 20 coies of the book and she is teaching a class at church on "Why Pray?"

Good book. We read this book with our 14 year old. Each days reading is fairly short which made it doable for our busy family. It gave rise to some great discussions and really made our daughter think about her faith on a deeper level than she had before.

I really liked this book. It gave me a new insight into my prayer life as communication with our God as my prayers had become more of a "please give, please do" prayers. I liked that it is divided into 40 days so it walked me through changes little by little and allowed me to adjust my focus in a more meaningful way. Good book for discussion groups/Bible study groups.

John DeVries "tells it like it is". The most important step is the first step--the step of prayer. From page 68, We accomplish very little because we are out of step with Jesus. We often run the church like a corporation, with planning meetings, goals, and objectives: and when we have it all figured out, we bless it with a "word of prayer" asking God to give us success. I would recommend this book to anyone involved in any kind of Christian ministry and individuals who want to grow spiritually.

I love this book! He has a wonderful, challenging, story-telling style of writing that is capturing with each devotion. Recommended this book to many friends already and plan to buy a bunch for Christmas presents!
I got this book for my daughter for study. Now I read it, too, and I love it. She seems to keep reading chapter by chapter. It's easy to understand and very well written that I can always learn and don't want to stop reading!!!
