Published in 1811, Sense and Sensibility has delighted generations of readers with its masterfully crafted portrait of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. Forced to leave their home after their father's death, Elinor and Marianne must rely on making good marriages as their means of support. But unscrupulous cads, meddlesome matriarchs, and various guileless and artful women impinge on their chances for love and happiness. This book seems to be someone's summarized version of Jane Austen's work.
Jane Eyre (Bantam Classics). Jane Austen (1775-1817) was extremely modest about her own genius but has become one of English literature's most famous women writers. She is also the author of Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey. Ros Ballaster is Professor of 18th Century Studies at Mansfield College, Oxford.

Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" is not the polished, skillfully crafted novel that her "Pride and Prejudice" is, but I nevertheless found it nearly as entertaining and wonderfully written and it has an array of rich characters. The subject matter is, once again, upper class British society and how money, land ownership, titles, and good looks influences who you marry much more than love; and how a woman's livelihood depended so much on the men they married.
Published in 1811, Sense and Sensibility has delighted generations of readers with its masterfully crafted portrait of two sisters, Elinor . This is another of the books in the Austen Project, modern authors retelling the Austen classics. This one even has the same name as the original.

Sense and Sensibility is a novel by Jane Austen, published in 1811. It was published anonymously; By A Lady appears on the title page where the author's name might have been. It tells the story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor (age 19) and Marianne (age 16 1/2) as they come of age. They have an older half-brother, John, and a younger sister, Margaret, 13. The novel follows the three Dashwood sisters as they must move with their widowed mother from the estate on which they grew up, Norland Park.
With an introduction. This extract is a brief reference to a letter whichhad been received from Cassandra Austen, begging her correspondent notto mention that Aunt Jane wrote Sense and Sensibility. Beyond theseminute items of information, and the statement-already referred to inthe Introduction to Pride and Prejudice -that she considered herselfoverpaid for the labour she had bestowed upon it, absolutely nothingseems to have been preserved by her descendants respecting her firstprinted effort.
Two sisters, one practical and full of commonsense, the other a passionate and emotional creature, an uncaring brother and his avaricious wife, a handsome rake and a faithful gentleman – these are some of the unforgettable characters who make Jane Austen's first published novel, Sense and Sensibility such a delightful, witty and timeless classic.
Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen’s first published novel, tells the story of the lives, loves, and longings of two sisters, the sensitive, romantic Marianne and the practical, even-tempered Elinor. In typical Austen fashion we are made aware from the outset that Marianne’s choice of suitor, the dashing and theatrical Willoughby, may be a disaster. Elinor’s more subdued love object, the shy and awkward Edward Ferrars, on the other hand, just might prove himself worthy if he could manage to articulate a full sentence. Austen began working on Sense and Sensibility in 1795 with an epistolary fragment entitled Elinor and Marianne (now lost).
Pride and Prejudice (Bantam Classics). This is my second Jane Austen book. I'm ashamed to say that
Pride and Prejudice (Bantam Classics). I'm ashamed to say that. I'm also sad that I never had the chance to read these in school.

Jane Austen Sense and Sensibility Chapter 1 The family of Dashwood had long been settled in Sussex. Their estate was large, and their residence was at Norland Park, in the centre of their property, where, for many generations, they had lived in so respectable a manner as to engage the general good opinion of their surrounding acquaintance. The late owner of this estate was a single man, who lived to a very advanced age, and w.
