David Hurst Thomas has served as curator of anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City since 1972. A specialist in Native American archaeology, Thomas discovered both Gatecliff Shelter (Nevada) and the lost 16th- and 17th-century Franciscan mission Santa Catalina de Guale on St. Catherine's Island, Georgia. He has led the long-term excavation of Mission San Marcos near Santa Fe (New Mexico) and recently returned to St. Catherine's Island for long-term archaeological exploration.

This is a well-written introductory book on Archaeology that I've been using in my intro to Archaeology community college classes for the past 4 years. 2 people found this helpful.

A brief synopsis, distilled from Thomas' Archaeology (1989), of contemporary archaeology as taught and practiced in American universities. Pivots on the work of eight archaeologists to present a highly personal account of the field. Acidic paper. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

The book was in great condition and although my class called for the 5th edition I'm following along okay. The page #'s are just a little different. I understand this is an educational book but its a bit of a tough read. I mean, I have been reading at college level since junior high, a lot of unnecessary 'big words' that do nothing to enhance the point. Kind of boring I would say as in 'Just the facts mam, only the facts'. Great pics and illustrations.

The book had a lot of great information about the specifics of archaeology, archaeological practices and archaeological theories but was extremely dense and honestly pretty boring. It was a chore to read through some of the chapters and I'm completely captivated by the field of archaeology and archaeology in general. The authors of this book are clearly very passionate about their work, however putting some of the information in layman's terms for a student would help tremendously. Many class mates of mine have been disillusioned by archaeology just because of this book.

If you're a student that's taking courses in archaeology (like I am) or are simply interested in learning about it, this might not be the best book that introduces you to the field. Yes, it has all the information needed to get to know the gist of archaeology, it just does it an a very disengaging manner.

I have not read the entire book, but the parts I read were interesting. A bit dry in some areas, but overall very good. Would recommend.

Limited resources for classical archeology, but a great resource for high school students!

I took an Archaeology class as a blow-off class basically, but I really enjoyed reading this book and found that Archaeology is in fact interesting and all around us!
