Sutton's book is not a catalog raisonne of de Hooch's paintings, but it certainly covers his most important works, as well as listing their provenance, exhibition history, and references to associated literature. The book was the catalog for a major de Hooch exhibition in 1998-99.

The illustrations are nearly all full-page, in color, and without exception of very high quality. The discussion of each work is on the facing page, so no flipping around to find the painting under review. The historical context of de Hooch's work is covered in detail, including his relationship to other artists of the time.

De Hooch was a wonderful painter, and Sutton knows his work inside and out; de Hooch died in an insane asylum, so the discussion of the oft-claimed deterioration of de Hooch's skills from his days in Delft to the latter part of his career in Amsterdam is especially interesting.

Highest recommendation.
