Sir Jacob Epstein KBE (10 November 1880 – 21 August 1959) was an American-British sculptor who helped pioneer modern sculpture. He was born in the United States, and moved to Europe in 1902, becoming a British subject in 1911. He often produced controversial works which challenged ideas on what was appropriate subject matter for public artworks. He also made paintings and drawings, and often exhibited his work.

Jacob Epstein made his name as a sculptor of monuments and portraits, and as an occasional painter and illustrator. In his lifetime he championed many of the concepts central to modernist sculpture, including 'truth to material', direct carving, and inspiration from so-called primitive art, all of which became central to twentieth-century practice. Epstein was born on 10 November 1880 in New York, of Polish-Jewish parentage. He attended art classes at the Art Students League . 896 and then went to night school . 899 where he began sculpting under George Grey Bernard.

Sir Jacob Epstein was a pioneer of modernism in his use of direct carving and of primitive art as a means of conveying the deepest abstract feelings. First published in 1987, this is a catalogue of the artist's work.

That’s Jeffrey Epstein, of course

That’s Jeffrey Epstein, of course. Even though their names were in his notorious little black book, along with those of known associates like Prince Andrew, Donald Trump and Alan Dershowitz, these individuals said they were not sure why they appeared. They weren’t, they said, friends, or even passing acquaintances. A scattering of others who appeared in the book - a magazine executive, a literary agent, a fashion executive and a publicist - also said they had never met Mr. Epstein.
