In September 2012, Simmons began an unconventional book tour. Traveling across America and then the world with her book and a ukulele, she talked about Leonard Cohen, read from the books and performed his songs – often accompanied by different guest musicians in each town

Sylvie Simmons is one of the best-known names in rock journalism. Her books include the short story collection Too Weird For Ziggy, the Neil Young biography Reflections In Broken Glass, and A Fistful Of Gitanes, which Leonard Cohen described as "wonderful" and JG Ballard made his book of the year. Born and raised in London, she currently lives in San Francisco.

I would recommend A Fistful of Gitanes, by Sylvie Simmons (Helter Skelter), which is a highly entertaining biography of the French singer-songwriter and all-round scallywag. JG Ballard An excellent piece of writing. Leonard Cohen Gitanes is a stone masterpiece! – Stephen Davis (author, Hammer Of The Gods) A wonderful introduction to one of the most overlooked songwriters of the 20th century. The Times (Number 3, top music books of 2001) The most intriguing music-biz biography of the year

In this, the first biography to capture Gainsbourg in all his contradiction and gleeful outrageousness, Sylvie Simmons tells the fascinating story of the Gallic star.

A riveting story about a very complex man of many talents. The anecdotes by Jane Birkin, Marianne Faithfull, and others who knew Serge brought this book to life.

The only fault I found with the book were the black and white pictures. Most are of very poor quality. That is why I gave it 4 stars. However, the writing is superb.

If you aren't a SG fan yet, you will be after reading.

I am no specialist in the history of pop etc, but I have read this book with interest. If you are curious about Gainsbourg, then you should probably get it. This is an upbeat bio, and there are a lot of illustrations (photographs).

Really enjoyed reading this. I knew very little about Gainsbourg other than his single from the 60s, Je t'aime. I can now fully understand why France came to a halt when he died. It's worth knowing more about individuals who can have such an effect on a country and this book is very well written.

A wonderful read!

Feels like a long newspaper article, which is fine. Has a good vibe.

This was a wonderful book on Serge. The photographs were great, too. I liked that the book was clearly written and included tons of names and places so I could do further research.

Lovely feel good story painting rural life in Spain at the beginning of the previous century. Mr Gordon brings his characters and environment to vivid life.
Such a great book, magnificent story of a beautiful man. Also great if you're interested in Gainsbourg and don't read French....
