From the fall of the Han dynasty at the turn of the third century to the eventual reunification of the country under the Sui at the turn of the seventh century, China experienced a tumultuous and fascinating political and cultural history. NEW YORK - As they walk through the Metropolitan Museum's "China: Dawn of a Golden Age, 200-750 . " many people will marvel at the new portrait of Chinese art and culture over five crucial centuries that comes across almost instantly. In a gripping introduction (sometimes difficult to follow because it is so packed with information), James Watt, the Met curator who masterminded this unforgettable exhibition, describes the intermingling of the Xianbei with the native Han population. There is still considerable hesitation concerning the precise identity of the groups covered by this designation.

This catalogue accompanies an ambitious exhibition, held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2004-2005, of a substantial body of archaeological objects from China that demonstrates the wealth and cultural breadth of the Chinese dynasties between the Han and the Tang. Six essays are included, beginning with an introductory history by Watt (chairman of the Met's department of Asian art) and including essays on Central Asian metalwork found in China and Buddhist art in China. Three essays are included on the arts of the Silk Road; the interest in a variety of arts from distant lands is a central theme of the exhibition.
