A Journey into Mythic Models. com User, May 19, 2004. I found 45 Master Characters by Victoria Schmidt to be very helpful in writing my novel because showed me how my characters' weaknesses and fears would hinder them. I had already built several archetypes, and having names for the type, either Greek Pathenon-oriented or descriptive, gave me handles to steer the plot where it needed to go.

I started with the 20 Master Plots book by Ronald B. Tobias and loved it. It gave insight to the industry and was a solid bag of tools that a new writer like myself can happily put into the craft toolbox. I hastily ordered the other two of this set, both by Victoria Lynn Scmidt. The difference between these two authors is staggering. Tobias' book was more concise and had more to-the-point bits of information that are easily digested. Victoria's books are ranty and read like a blog post in too many places for me.

Too much of her own self comes through the information, mostly in the form of social justice dog whistles that became way too distracting for me. The characters archetypes themselves are only going to help those who have absolutely no idea what they're doing in the realm of characters and even then I would recommend finding an author that doesn't subtly inject ideology, whether consciously or unconsciously, into something fundamentally non-political: a medium of storytelling.

This is one of my essential writing tools. Whenever I'm stuck on developing a character it never fails to get me out of the rut. No matter what genre you write, this is an essential tool to have to bring your characters to life. Why? Because 45 Master Characters is one of those rare writing advice books that gets you thinking about who your characters really are—which not only makes them seem more real, but will keep your plot line moving from beginning to end.

Jam packed with timeless writing tips, Victoria Lynn Schmidt's "45 Master Characters," is one of the best book for novelists I've read. Her writing style is clear and accessible and her examples are relevant to today's "show don't tell" era.
I'm currently using tips I've learned from this book on a current work in progress that has already been praised by industry insiders. I can't wait to see how they'll react after I've incorporated a few of Ms. Schmidt's advice into my work.
I highly recommend this book for beginners or those who believe they are "advanced." The truth is, none of us are "advanced writers." Regardless of our writing experience or success, every day we can choose to become better writers by adopting a humble, growth mindset. This book was written for that kind of writer, the ones who allow their characters and themselves to experience and conquer the path set before them.

If you are writing fiction, you must look at this. Better yet, buy it, and use it. The author helps you create the archetypes needed in fiction--it will also help you in screenplays. Well worth it, and your writing will work improve once you have it.

I have an older version of this. I left it in my classroom for the summer which is locked up tightly when I realized, I needed it. Instead of trying to break into the building, I figured I would just purchase it again and was pleasantly surprised that it was under $15. Not only that, but it was an updated version.

I am really interested in character archetypes and this book cuts it. It is a great read, great conversation piece, and it really puts characters into perspective for budding writers.

Highly recommend.

I like this book as a reference tool. By looking at some of the classic characters in literature and movies, many of which we are somewhat familiar, I can draw on personalities, behavior, attitudes and actions. For me, this book will help a writer like me to see more in-depth what a particular type of character is thinking and perhaps how he/she got to where they are. Was it abuse, neglect, bad luck, bad timing, anger, etc. This will help me to build new male and female archetypes and how that character will develop.

Victoria Schmidt has done a wonderful job of putting this all together for a better understanding how to develop the journey of a hero or heroine's character arc to enhance and move a story along.

I recommend this book to new and intermediate writers.

Fiction is not reality. I had forgotten this when I was creating the characters in my current book. My characters were complex, but were not compelling. They were boring. They didn't interest me and would not interest a reader.

45 Master Characters fixed that problem for me.

For example, I had a character who is a woman trying to advance in a company. I had muddled ideas of whether she should be using sex to try to get ahead, how soft or tough she should be, and how she should think.

45 Master Characters helped me see that she fell into the category of the Father's Daughter. An archetype exemplified by Athena, Captain Janeway and Murphy Brown. Once I knew this I was able to see that she would not use sex to get ahead, that she would be fairly tough minded, and that she would be independent. I dropped a family from her backstory, removed any thoughts of her using sex to get ahead and generally tightened my picture of her. Ironically, my backstory included significant influence from her father, so I was already seeing glimmers of the "Father's Daughter" archetype before the book made it clear.

Schmidt gives us the positive and negative for each Archetype. For example the Father's Daughter has a negative side called The Backstabber (Katherine Parker "Sigorney Weaver" in Working Girl)

The book is an essential part of an author's reference library.
I purchased this book for my own research library, on the recommendation of my daughter Stephanie Huesler who is also an author. I haven't read it in depth as yet, but can see that it will be of much help to me in my own writing. I have authored two children's books, but now am launching out into other genres, and I THANK Victoria Lynn Schmidt for her excellent presentations in this book.
