Escaping into the Open: The Art of Writing True by Elizabeth Berg is an excellent book for writers seeking to improve. Berg makes suggestions that are to the point. For example: "It's always best to write trying to please an audience of only one -- you." Another: "Love your writing; be there with your writing; but don't sabotage yourself with seriousness." Berg is certainly serious in helping her readers to improve their writing, but she does so in a way that is relaxed, often using stories from her own writing life. Berg writes, "There are people who have never studied writing who are fully capable of being writers. I know this because I am an example." Thank you, Elizabeth Berg, for sharing your life and helping others to become better writers.

I bought and read this book years ago when I first yearned to become a writer. I loved Elizabeth Berg's fiction and her written ability to encourage me to write was comfortable and welcomed. I recently (Sept 2015) had the opportunity to take a 1-day Writing Boot Camp with Elizabeth Berg and it was easily a Top-10 event in my life! Even if you can't take a writing workshop with EB...you can buy this book and you will definitely have a sense of who she is and why she's a great teacher and author.

This book was recommended by my Creative Writing tutor and it is excellent with some great insight about how to connect with your reading audience. I highly recommend it for those just starting a serious writing hobby or career. There is nothing earthshaking to be found, but just a lot of common sense to help a writer along.

Elizabeth Berg excels in fiction writing and I liked finding her 'easy' prose works in non-fiction as well. I'd read this book in digital form from my library and halfway through realized I wanted to own it to refer to any time.
I was delighted to meet Elizabeth at Chicago's Literary Festival a year ago -

I love Elizabeth Berg's writing; her style, her way with the perfect detail, her multi sensory approach. Her characters are quirky, believable, complicated and lovable. The stories surprise me and her writing is just a luxurious bath to immerse in. This book shares her ways of writing with us with the same generosity of spirit one senses from all her novels. I learned a lot an dgot to know the author a little better as well. 100% worth it.

Ms Berg is a marvelous writer of fiction and non-fiction. I found this book to be very helpful and a delight to read. I felt she was in the room with me, when she gave homework lessons. What a gift she has to be able to communicate her thoughts and emotions so that you think you're in the room with her. My favorite book for writing was, "On Writing", by Stephen King, but now I need to say it's this one. Thank you Ms Berg for cementing my love of writing.

Long an admirer of Berg's fiction, I found this book as delightful as her novels. While some is elementary (exercises), most of it is full of wisdom gleaned over the years of Berg's writing and good for a writer in any stage of development. It is told in her warm and almost chatty style. As good as her fiction. Nell Abbott
Fantastic writing exercises in this book!
