Austin Osman Spare was an English artist who developed idiosyncratic magical techniques including automatic writing, automatic drawing and sigilization based on his theories of the relationship between the conscious and unconscious self. Some of Spare's techniques, particularly the use of sigils and the creation of an "alphabet of desire" were adopted, adapted and popularized by Peter J. Carroll in the work Liber Null & Psychonaut. Carroll and other writers such as Ray Sherwin are seen as key figures in the emergence of some of Spare's ideas and techniques as a part of a magical movement loosely referred to as Chaos magic.

Spare's writings are abstruse, to say the least, but they originally came in books that were literally works of art. You can't just print out the text with no care or feeling for font and typography alongside (or under) some haphazardly placed black and white reproductions of his art and expect it to gel. If you're just curious about what he wrote you can look up all the texts contained in this book online. Not only are there numerous spelling issues that take away from the meaning, the pictures are poorly reproduced as well, drawing away from the sublime message and teaching of Austin Osman Spare. kikiwanderer, April 26, 2011.

such a sad presentation of these pieces. spare's prose is dense with symbolism and entendre, and his automatic writings in the first section are especially hard to parse, all of this being made more difficult with a printing that seemingly came from a college dorm room-- typos, grammatical errors, missing footnotes. seriously did no one proof read this? the writings are extremely interesting and this edition is your only option to collect them unless you want to pay hundreds (or more) for originals. the psychology of ecstasy is especially interesting and the one most easily read; the other two pieces are of interest to surrealists for their literary merit but no context for who Zos was/were is ever given and other than a few passages have no narrative (which I don't mind but its annoying when I'm not sure if I'm missing his meaning because of a typo, missing oxford comma, or maybe an entire clause is missing!!).

as others have noted the presentation is laughable throughout with this paintings and sketches (which are second only to da vinci and blake to me) are printed at such a low resolution. i'm talking 20dpi on the front cover (!) and the illustrations inside are no better. i hope someday a respectable printer finds these works and releases a nice hardback oversized grimmoire of all his prose and automatic drawings and gives the man the place in history he deserves. these 3 works are rare even on the net, so picking this up is almost mandatory. 5 stars for the content availability, 1 star for presentation.

The writings in the book are great but for this addition, I give it three stars. Here is why:

1. I noticed several grammatical errors and spacing errors.

2. The artwork is not of the highest quality. I do not recommend this edition for its artwork appearance.

3. The outside cover is of not great quality and the cover art appears to have been blown up from a smaller jpeg image and is unclear and rather pixelated. If you want to know what I mean, take a jpeg image from Google and print it on full page to see what I mean.

4. There was a whole page that was copied right after the original page. What I found interesting was that the chapter's foot notes went up in numerical value (e.g. 14-15) but it was the same exact footnote! It was just numbered differently.

If you are looking for a cheaper book of Spare, this one is ok, but if you want a perfect book with good looking artwork, look elsewhere.

I'm giving this book a full five stars for the writing itself, and not the production of the book, which was done very cheaply and poorly. Given that Spare's writing is both hard to find and expensive, it's hard for me to criticize this book since it makes three of Spare's writings - Anathema of Zos, The Book of Pleasure, and The Focus of Life - very inexpensive and all in one small (or thin) book. Making Spare's writing this accessible to anyone is to be appreciated, regardless of the lack of aesthetic perfection in the production of the book. Hopefully because of Phil Baker's recent biography on Spare, more attention will be given to Spare and more publications of Spare's work will be done by other publishers with the means to publish more aesthetically pleasing books.
Kigul
This is a rather disappointing edition of Spare's collected writing. Extremely sparse on illustrations and inferior bookbinding means this book is overpriced. The paper isn't that great, and gloss cover (no dustjacket) doesn't even have the book's title written on the spine. An inferior edition that is only desirable to the student because of the relative unavailability of these works.
Weernis
Not the most satisfying edition but there is no denying the mad genius of the material itself.
Doomredeemer
It was nice to find an edition of Spare's works but the presentation is below par.

Potentially devestating, potentially illuminating, potentially frustrating (it is kind of obtuse, but charting the mury waters of consciousness is not always a crystal clear task)...

Much sought after and widely unavailable (which raises prices drastically, making this collected volume an even better deal), these three works of Spare collected into one volume are each a gem in their own right... particularly the sandwhiched in middle "Book of Pleasure / Self Love", which offers a dynamic method and theory for exploring your psyche.

One of the most difficult things about practicing Spare's methods, is that they are so simple. The trappings of Western ceremonial magic(k) are largely intended to train the mind's focus onto a specific task/meditation. Spare's methods largely and dramatically strip magical practice of it's paraphernelia and accessories, paring it down to basics. Ultimately, what is offered here is a shamanistic approach that utilizes various approaches to trance-work and magic: outgoing (overstimulating the mind/body to point of _____) and ingoing (withdrawal and stillness) and artistic (sigils and automatic drawing).

Pervading these writings are a philosophical stance of anti-dogma, skepticism, and demand for personal investigation over faith. Revolutionary, this book is written by a man who was working with and writing about Automatic Drawing technique 10 years before the Surrealists apparently "discovered" it (though, they had never heard of Spare).
The writings can be difficult and definitely abstract, but are definite masterpieces of magical literature. Also helpful- Ramsey Dukes' essay "Spare Parts" is a great exploration of the Book of PLeasure.
