The fungal community has recently been buzzing about the new book recently published by Jens Petersen, which fills most mycologists with awe, and again underlines the wonders of the magical kingdom of Fungi. However, many of us have been asking ourselves, who is Jens Petersen, and how exactly did he capture these incredible photographs? To help answer some of these questions, we managed to track him down in Spain, where he just returned from a fungal ascomycete (MycoAsco) workshop.

taxa causing wood decay were identified; out of them 53 were white rot fungi and 23 brown rot fungi. The highest fungal species richness was recorded on Pinus pseudostrobus and P. teocote with a similarity index of 48%. The highest diversity of fungi was observed at elevation ranges between 1660 and 2200 m altitude. Dacrymyces dictiosporus, Gloeophyllum saepiarium, Meruliopsis ambigua, Phellinus. pini, and Trichaptum abietinum were the species that presented the highest altitudinal range distribution.

THE KINGDOM OF THE FUNGI is a very good book. At first glance, THE KINGDOM OF THE FUNGI appears to be a coffee table picture book about fungi. To be certain, the book is almost entirely large, color photographs of fungi. The immense array of shapes and colors of fungi is amazing. The text is very minimal, usually just an few to several lines of a column on a page. When THE KINGDOM OF THE FUNGI arrived, I was dismayed that I had bought a picture book for illiterate people. Not so! The minimal text is brilliantly packed with important information. Jens Petersen has done the world a great service in writing THE KINGDOM OF THE FUNGI. Reading THE KINGDOM OF THE FUNGI does not require an advanced degree in biology; Peterson explains the few terms he uses and the pictures demonstrate the new terms; the hand-in-hand text and pictures is an effective teaching method. Because the text is so minimal, THE KINGDOM OF THE FUNGI can be read in the spare time of just a few days. Despite the general ignorance of the public about fungi, fungi are everywhere and are very important in both the natural world and biotechnologies.

THE KINGDOM OF THE FUNGI is an excellent, very basic introduction to mycology. I highly recommend THE KINGDOM OF THE FUNGI to anyone desiring to learn about fungi. Very likely, people who have no present interest in fungi will develop an interest upon reading THE KINGDOM OF THE FUNGI and seeing all of the fungi. Again, THE KINGDOM OF THE FUNGI is an excellent reading choice.

Do not pick this book up if you are expecting a field guide or really in depth guide to Mycology, pick this book up if you are a lover of Fungi and want to be amazed by beautiful photos and snippets of information.

The Kingdom of Fungi takes a look at fungi from both a scientific standpoint as well as a 'coffee table-esque' visual guide to the various types and families. From microscopic to humongous fruiting bodies, the book starts with spores, hyphae, and mycellium, and gradually moves through the kingdom of Fungi. I absolutely love how it blends biology and beauty, this is no dry textbook.

I would say this is a great introduction to Mycology, if you know someone who has an interest in mushrooms and wants to make the leap from field guides to the 'hard stuff' I would say this is a great stepping stone.

For anyone who is curious about this kind of thing, most of the fungi used as photographic examples and studies in this book are from Denmark, Ecuador, Bhutan, Sweden, and a smattering of other locations. I was amused at how many fungi that are native to Denmark are native to parts of the world that I have gone mushrooming. This is a great addition to my mushroom book collection.

My entry into the mystical field of mycology was through medical mycology. In recent years I have become fascinated with mushrooms and am an avid hunter with camera. I like this book because it removes the source of some of my confusion. (Maybe PhD prepared people are not supposed to admit confusion but I do so freely.) Terms are defined and have a line drawing or a photograph. The confusing taxonomical groups are explained. The photographs are exquisite.

If you want a strictly scientific text this may not be what you think you want. I have the scientific texts and this book clears up some of the confusing parts of the science. This book has helped me see the forest through trees. Sometimes it is best to step back and get an overview. In addition, the book is so beautiful it would make an excellent coffee table book as a gift.

This was a gift for an 8 year old grandson who loves bugs and wanted books on other areas of biology. This book was a hit. It has great pictures and not too much text. It is a beautiful introduction into a fascinating world of nature. We all (his family) had no idea of the diversity and amazing beauty of fungi. Many interesting but mysterious things I have seen again and again in nature, and never understood, turn out to be fungi.

I ate through the book as most of it are pictures yet very informative. It covers many mushrooms from the Nordic Areas, African, and some South American fungi (some species found worldwide). The passion comes through in the pages, pictures are intense and colorful. Awesome coffee table book or a teaching aid. I'd say that this book would be the best option to introduce fungi towards benighted people.

Being new to the subject of fungus I find contemporary texts indespensible as I 'devour' the subject. Learning how to identify is only part of the study - getting to know what to do with the various mushrooms lends to more depth of discovery. Being careful about what you eat is balanced by learning how you can use mushrooms to improve environments for growing gardens. The photographs also display the mushrooms as the mesmerizing art forms they can become.

Excellent coffee table book. Interesting. Superb photography! But don't confuse it with something that may help identify your mushrooms. This book is rather on what these "creatures" are about. It's for someone who has a curious mind or/and just likes to watch beautiful and unusual pictures.
This is the perfect coffee table book. Incredibly sharp detailed photographs, and micrographs with concise and simple explanations. Use other books for fungi identification, and use this book for a wonderful introduction to the fascinating world of fungi.
