It was shown that functional morphogen gradients present strong biophysical constraints and lack of robustness to noise. This is often the result of site-specific translation of a protein that results in the formation of a morphogen gradient, typically transcription factors, that determines the overall body plan after fertilization (Ephrussi and St Johnston, 2004).
