The idea behind Life of Fred is that if students have an enjoyable experience and have fun doing their math, they will remember it and use it and have a good taste in their math about the whole subject. And that is just the point: math doesnt need to be horrid and dry. This is math-just as serious as it needs to be-and I can tell you from my childs smiles and chuckles, thats not very serious at all! As a bonus, these books are very low priced compared to any other math books on the market

The books are written by Dr. Stanley Schmidt, a retired math teacher who loves . Life of Fred: Beginning Algebra As Serious as it Needs to Be.

Part of his strategy is to build his math books around the adventures of Fred, a very young (six years old in the Geometry text and five years old in the lower level books) genius who is a math teacher at Kittens University. The stories shift from silly to serious, outlandish to edgy. The Life of Fred books are likely to be very appealing to learners who work better with stories and situations to help them visualize math problems.

Dr. Schmidt recommends that all students up to the end of 4th grade start with the Apples book as he introduces higher level math concepts throughout the entire elementary series.

As Serious as It Needs to Be. ≡ Show Menu. Important: Select Currency. Dr. Your student will be introduced to terminology that they normally would not encounter until much higher levels. Life of Fred Elementary does not spend a lot of time teaching the basic math facts. Schmidt believes the basic math facts can be taught in an informal way using games and flashcards.

The Life of Fred actually begins in the Calculus as serious as it needs to be book (in which Fred is born), the first written (in 2001). Unlike the other volumes, it has all the Your Turn to Play questions and answers in the back and a Further Ado section containing even more rigorous material for you to include at your discretion. Possibly because this volume was originally written for college students, the material is edgier in this first book (Fred’s dad drinks, his family is somewhat dysfunctional, and there are other allusions to drugs, alcohol and hanky panky )

This is an excellent educational resource. My high-school sons are finally picking up on concepts that eluded them throughout earlier math classes in other curricula.

Be aware, if you are familiar with the "Life of Fred" books for younger students, the humor in this one is a bit darker. In one chapter, C.C. Coalback hires Fred for the purpose of rolling marijuana joints, and in another, Fred's father's blood-alcohol content causes a police station to explode. Fred, of course, is naive and innocent throughout it all, having paid attention in Sunday school and always assuming the best about people. I personally find it all hilarious, but some of my fellow home-schooling friends might be taken aback.

Bought this book for my daughter's fiancé who at the beginning of last semester asked me to pray he'd get just a C in pre-cal. It helped him so much, he ended up with an A. Sometimes he'd read it aloud to my daughter just because it was so entertaining. I asked what made it so helpful, and he said the author just does a really good job explaining things in a way that makes sense. He's expecting it to help him through Cal I & II also! Thanks, Fred!!

My children love Life Of Fred Math books! I have heard there may be some inappropriate topics in the books for high school students but it didn't seem to be a problem in this book. Mr. Schmidt makes learning Math fun. I had one child who hated Math until he started LOF and now it's one of his favorite subjects! A pleasant "plus" is when we're going to be in the car for awhile, our kids take these books just to have something to read!
